ProjectTransformation of the Rhine Hall into Decathlon
The Rijnhal was built in the 1970s as a large sports hall in a late-modern style. The building is a dome-shaped concrete structure with a large clear span. Until the 1970s, the sports hall was used for various sports such as show jumping, indoor soccer and martial arts.
After no longer being used as an event venue and sports hall, it was thoroughly renovated in 2016 to make it suitable for housing Decathlon.
Decathlon is an originally French manufacturer and retailer of sportswear and attributes. Decathlon sells both the well-known sportswear brands and a large proportion of its own brands. They develop and design their own brands themselves. By taking over suppliers and factories in that segment, they have acquired the knowledge and experience for developing these brands and can offer good quality at an affordable price. This fits exactly with their mission: to make sports accessible to everyone.
Decathlon also wants its products to be testable in the store. For this purpose, pieces of sports fields are often included in the design: a soccer cage, a piece of climbing wall, rough terrain, bike track and running track.
Decathlon works out a Business Case for a location in great detail and looks for outlets where a long-term location is feasible. Many times Decathlon also owns or develops the property.
NewArmstrong designed and worked out the adjustments based on Decathlon’s architectural Program of Requirements.
The original large blue letters of the Rijnhal have returned to the design as the Decathlon logo.
During construction, we performed project management, executive management and construction supervision.
