A new venue full of light, sound and adrenaline: Gamestate Circus Zandvoort is live. In this iconic location: the first postmodern building in the Netherlands with tyypical flags as its facade.

But before the first game was played, something else had to happen: the space had to be safe, licensed and ready for use. And after the previous projects we have handled for Gamestate, we also handled the permits for this one.

Safety as a prerequisite for perception

Gamestate is not your average arcade. It is a crossover between hotel lobby, casino and gaming arena. Think floating ceilings in neon colors, a luxurious carpet, a cocktail bar, poll tables, a movie theater and a free lineup of dozens of arcade machines.

That free indeliong requires a smart approach to use notification.

Because how do you ensure that a space that is constantly changing – with changing machinery, light shows and sound effects – also meets the requirements of fire safety, escape routes and functional lighting?

The role of NewArmstrong

Use notification and permit process: We supervised the entire process, from application to approval.
Flexible escape plan: Because the arrangement of machinery changes frequently, we designed an escape plan with fixed main routes and free zones beyond.
Smart technology in emergencies: In case of fire, the system automatically switches over: sound and colored lights go off, emergency lights come on.
Coordination with all stakeholders: We were the point of contact for the tenant, the landlord and the municipality – and made sure that the contents of the occupancy report were coordinated.

Why is the use notice important?

A use notice is not a formality. It is a crucial step in enabling a safe, legal and attractive experience.

Especially with concepts like Gamestate, where experience and technology go hand in hand, it is essential that the technology moves with the design.

Machinery changes location frequently. That means the electrics, sprinkler systems and escape routes cannot be static. Therefore, the connection points are incorporated into the floor and the escape plan is based on main routes that always remain clear. Outside those routes, there is room for free arrangement, as long as the minimum clearance width is respected

The procedure in the event of a fire is also tailored to the experience: the games make a lot of noise and use bright colors. Therefore, there is a special circuit that automatically switches off the sound and colored lighting in the event of a fire alarm, and switches on the functional lighting. This creates calm and overview in an emergency situation

The lounge with bar, the soft carpet, the upbeat music – everything contributes to a total experience. And that experience should not only be attractive, but also safe and responsible.

Therefore, the permit process is not a closing item, but an integral part of the design. We ensure that the technology, regulations and experience reinforce each other.
