Successful virtual design evaluation with Workshop XR

For successful design evaluations, we evaluated a demo pilot of Autodesk’s upcoming VR software with NTI CAD & Company : Workshop XR (building on IRIS VR’s Prospect). This package is not only to be able to virtually walk through a model to review but also clash and annotate in the model, from the VR glasses.

Why is Workshop XR so suitable for a virtual design presentation?

Autodesk Workshop XR is a groundbreaking virtual workspace designed specifically for architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) teams. This tool connects directly to Autodesk Construction Cloud and provides a seamless environment for design reviews and collaboration.

Autodesk Workshop XR enables design and construction teams to:

1. Bring design and execution together virtually: the tool enables comparison of design models with actual execution on the construction site. This helps with quality control, identifying execution errors and supporting planning.
2. virtual design evaluations: In the virtual workspace, team members can naturally inspect and analyze 3D models. They can work together in real time to solve problems and discuss design options. It is possible to walk synchronously through the model with multiple VR glasses, also seeing each other in VR as an avatar. This works even if you are not physically in the same location. And with speech: so you can compare it like a Teams Meeting in your building model. And the clashes and feedback are shared in the source model (ACC).
3. Creating training scenarios: Operators can prepare for maintenance and operational tasks by creating and practicing training scenarios before actually going on site.

Our evaluation

The team behind Autodesk Workshop XR has a clear vision: to create an immersive and collaborative environment in which AEC professionals can seamlessly work together and optimize designs.

We see good opportunities here:

• A walktrough goes fine, even with the virtual tools (virtual annotation board)
• measuring in the model goes well
• redlining or making comments in the virtual model is very easy and does not interfere with the walktrough
• calling everyone in the virtual model together in one place to discuss a clash is very easy
• talking together works, but there is still a considerable delay: you talk through each other quickly. This should be less to consult fine
