NewArmstrong’s design strategy for PWN
Design Strategy
In recent months, NewArmstrong has been working for PWN on a design strategy to reconcile PWN’s 7 sustainable principles with the technical requirements of their production sites. To this end, we examined several variants and conducted extensive material research into possible applications and how they relate to the sustainable and technical principles.
On topics such as energy supply, circularity, Digital Twin, choice of materials, choices have been presented to make the plans. We visualized three scenarios: the minimum required, a middle scenario and a maximum scenario (“the free spirits”). With this, various choices are made very visually to inform decision-making.
On Feb. 15, general manager Paulien Pistor signed the contracting agreement on behalf of PWN to start the renovation of Wim Mensink pumping station in Wijk aan Zee next fall.
Design
In the period leading up to the start of construction, NewArmstrong will work with the construction team to deepen the further elaboration of the design strategy into a Final Design and construction details so that with that we can apply for permits and prepare for construction.
With the renovation of the pumping station, PWN is taking an important step in expanding its production capacity. The expansion is necessary as North Holland’s population grows and economic activity increases. Present at the signing were NewArmstrong and the other members of the construction team.
Like NewArmstrong, the parties that will carry out the plan to remodel the pump station are all from North Holland. For underground infrastructure it is Van Baarsen Buisleidingen BV of Badhoevedorp, for construction it is AC Borst Bouw BV of Castricum, for mechanical engineering it is OER Projects BV of Warmenhuizen and for electrical engineering it is Batenburg Digit BV of Zwaag.
Planning
The renovation of Wim Mensink pumping station will start next fall and last until 2027. Afterwards, a purification step in the pumping station that uses chemicals was replaced by UV. This also means that the number of transport movements through Wijk aan Zee will be drastically reduced from then on, as the supply of chemicals will no longer be needed. The renovation of Wim Mensink pumping station is part of PWN’s plans to increase production capacity by 2030.
